Fit to Teach Episode 5: Educators and Role Models

With the encouragement of co-worker and CrossFit coach Meredith Davis, 18 Cannon School educators in Concord, North Carolina, started training at CrossFit Vitality. In this nine-part series, these teachers and administrators go through CrossFit fundamentals and try to determine the cognitive impact of the program.

In Part 5, we learn how Davis uses her knowledge of CrossFit to teach anatomy and exercise physiology. Through instructional videos featuring seven-time CrossFit Games competitor Jason Khalipa, Davis’ students learn from one of the fittest people on Earth.

“Khalipa’s awesome,” she says. “He breaks it down, he keeps it real, and they get it. They love it.”

After the classroom, it’s time to hit the weight room, where students put the instruction into practice and Davis switches from teacher to coach.

“She makes it a lot easier to learn,” says Evan, a senior at Cannon School. “If I were just, like, watching an instructional video … I would never have gotten it, but she breaks it down a lot easier for you to pick up on.”

“I just like how she can do what she’s trying to teach us to do,” adds Reed, also a senior.

For Davis, the reward is being able to help teenagers redefine their idea of self-image and fitness.
