Follow Matt and Cherie Chan in this series as they explore new territory and hang out with people who use their bodies to meet the challenges of a world in constant motion.
In 2012, the couple was inspired to sell their house, move into a travel trailer and hit the road.
“By getting involved with these things—firefighting, the gym, training consistently—two years had gone by and we had no adventures together,” Matt says. “We just got sucked up into the rat race without knowing it.”
In this episode, the Chans are on the “Big Island,” Hawaii, hanging out with professional big-wave surfer and CrossFit athlete Shane Dorian. The couple spent time with Dorian surfing, bow hunting, working out and meeting his family.
First up: bow hunting.
“Matt’s the kind of guy that everybody hates,” Dorian says of the six-time CrossFit Games athlete. “He’s the kind of guy who wants to learn how to surf and can learn super quick. He’s the kind of guy who picks up a bow for the first time and he’s a great archer. I think he’s gonna be a badass bow hunter.”
Practice is different than actually hunting, though.
“I think I shot three arrows and all three were misses,” Chan says.
After hours waiting and hunting, the men didn’t get any boar.
“Even though neither of us put food on the table that night, it was an experience I won’t soon forget. Hunting has been an essential part of life throughout history, and this evening I got a sense it might even be coded in our DNA,” Chan said.
Watch for more with the Chans and Dorian on the next episode of “inFlux: A World in Constant Motion.”
