Virtuosity 5: Therapy

In Virtuosity 4, we heard how CrossFit helped an athlete regain her athleticism after an accident. Virtuosity 5 deals with therapy as well but addresses issues that go well beyond sore muscles and creaky joints.

Ryan Saunders lives with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and he’s found the best form of therapy is the barbell in his garage. Saunders explains CrossFit’s prescription of constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity is helping him overcome his challenges, and he describes PTSD as “just another benchmark girl taunting me from the record board.”

For sharing his story, CrossFit Inc. is sending Saunders US$500, as well as a $500 gift card from Rogue Fitness so he can buy a few more weapons for his fight against PTSD.

For the next edition of Virtuosity, we want to hear your thoughts about the CrossFit Games Open. How does the worldwide competition unite your affiliate? How do your coaches and training partners support you in the challenging workouts? How does the Open best showcase the community aspect of the CrossFit program?

To increase the chances of publication, read the submission guidelines at the end of the article and review the previous articles in this series. You can find them all by entering “virtuosity” in the search box above.

Write with skill and send your story to virtuosity@crossfit.com. We cannot respond to each submission due to the volume, but we read and appreciate them all.
